IODINE + SELENIUM SYNERGY: T4 > T3
Many people know that the thyroid needs iodine to synthesize T3 and T4, the main thyroid hormones. But what's less well known is that without selenium, these hormones remain inactive.
Selenium activates a key enzyme (deiodinase) which converts T4 (inactive form) to T3 (active form). It also protects thyroid cells from excess free radicals generated during hormone synthesis.
Selenium deficiency can therefore limit the effectiveness of iodine, leading to functional hypothyroidism even when sufficient iodine is present in the body.
This is why a combined intake is often more appropriate than an isolated one.
