Sea Buckthorn Oil: the benefits of a plant oil at the heart of your skin

Small berries, big effects.

Sea Buckthorn oil, extracted from the orange berries of the Hippophae rhamnoides shrub, is a unique plant oil that has been prized for centuries for its benefits to skin and mucous membranes. Rich in omega-7 fatty acids, carotenoids and vitamin E, it is distinguished by its ability to deeply rehydrate and strengthen the skin barrier from within.

What is sea buckthorn oil?

Sea buckthorn oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the pulp (and sometimes the seeds) of sea buckthorn berries. Its intense orange color testifies to its richness in carotenoids, notably provitamin A, and antioxidant vitamins.

It is particularly renowned for its exceptional palmitoleic acid (omega-7) content, a rare fatty acid naturally present in epithelial tissue.

The origin of sea buckthorn

Traditionally grown in the highlands of Tibet, sea buckthorn is now also cultivated in Europe, under rigorous organic conditions.

This continental origin not only preserves the excellent quality of the plant oil, but also reduces CO2 emissions linked to long-distance transport. A concrete gesture towards more sustainable cosmetics.

FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING

Imagine a cold infusion, but under pressure: all the aromas and active ingredients are extracted without ever cooking them.

How is Sea Buckthorn oil extracted?

Supercritical CO₂ extraction, without solvents, is a gentle method that respects the plant's natural active ingredients.

This process uses carbon dioxide heated and compressed so that it adopts a “supercritical” state, between gas and liquid.

In this state, it acts as a 100% natural solvent, able to penetrate plant cells and extract active compounds without excessive heat or chemical residue. The result is an oil that is pure, concentrated, stable and perfectly tolerated.

Which part of the plant is used?

Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) berries are the main source of oil. Two types of oil can be extracted:

Berry pulp oil (richer in omega-7)

Seed oil (richer in omega-3)

Main components

Sea buckthorn oil contains several essential fatty acids, antioxidant vitamins and plant phytosterols

Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid): mostly 25-30%, but sometimes with an exceptional concentration of 37%

Omega-9 (oleic acid): approx. 12-20%

Omega-6 (linoleic acid): 15-30%

Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid): 1-4%

Vitamin E and tocopherols

Carotenoids (Vitamin A)

Phytosterols

The benefits of sea buckthorn oil

Sea buckthorn oil has many virtues:

Immune support: thanks to carotenoids and vitamin E;

Cardiovascular health thanks to polyunsaturated fatty acids that help regulate cholesterol (cf. Finnish study, 2012);

Protects cells against oxidative stress by helping neutralize the free radicals responsible for cell aging;

Reduces irritation of mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, vagina) by improving their natural hydration.

A guaranteed healthy-glow effect !

Sea buckthorn oil works from the inside out, nourishing deep-seated tissues via oral supplementation (capsules). Unlike a local application, it provides a global and continuous action on the skin and mucous membranes.

Mechanism of action

  • Omega-7 reinforces the skin's natural lipid barrier
  • Vitamin E combats the free radicals responsible for skin ageing
  • Carotenoids stimulate skin regeneration and give a healthy glow

What science has to say

Lipids in Health and Disease (2010)

Une étude publiée dans Lipids in Health and Disease (2010) montre qu’une prise d’huile d’argousier pendant 3 mois améliore significativement la santé des muqueuses vaginales chez les femmes ménopausées.

International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2014

Une autre recherche (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2014) rapporte une amélioration visible de la rétention d’eau dans l’épiderme chez les sujets ayant reçu de l’huile d’argousier.

Properties and use

The different shapes

Sea buckthorn can be used in different forms, each with its own specific advantages:

Pure oil (cosmetic use): to be applied locally to the skin or hair. Highly concentrated, it is often diluted with another vegetable oil.

Capsule oil: for internal use, on the skin, mucous membranes or cardiovascular system. This is the most practical form for daily supplementation.

Berry juice: less common, more acidic and less concentrated in lipids.

Berry powder (in food supplements or smoothies): rich in fiber, vitamin C and water-soluble antioxidants.

💡 Capsules remain the most suitable form for a targeted nutritional cure, particularly for skin or intimate dryness problems.

Can it be used in cooking?

Technically, yes, but that's not its main use. Sea buckthorn oil has a powerful, tangy flavor, and its high carotenoid content makes it unstable at high temperatures.

It is therefore best used cold, in very small quantities (in a smoothie, for example, or in a spoonful of oil mixed with other fats).

For health use, capsules remain the most practical and effective solution.

Precautions for use

  • Respect recommended doses (often 1 to 2 capsules a day);
  • Do not combine with anticoagulant treatment without medical advice;
  • Always consult a healthcare professional in case of chronic pathology or doubt.

Who should avoid sea buckthorn oil?

  • People on anticoagulant therapy;
  • Pregnant or breast-feeding women (as a precaution, unless advised by a doctor);
  • Young children without professional advice.

What are the side effects?

Sea buckthorn oil is generally well tolerated. At high doses, it may cause :

A mild laxative effect;

Minor digestive upset in sensitive individuals;

Rarely, a skin reaction (if used topically).

Not all sea buckthorn oils are created equal

Choose brands that:

Clearly specify the omega-7 content (at least 30%);

Use supercritical CO₂ extraction;

Indicate the origin of the crops (avoid dubious or non-organic sources);

Present the oil in softgel form for better preservation.

Characteristics of good-quality sea buckthorn oil

  • European origin and organic farming to limit carbon impact;
  • Solvent-free, gentle extraction:
  • High concentration of omega-7;
  • Laboratory-tested for purity and lipid profile.
